Breast cancer support when you least expect it

This online post is one of a number of stories shared with AstraZeneca by women who have been diagnosed with and treated for early breast cancer.

“Breast cancer can change the way people look at you. For that matter, it’s changed the way I look at myself. Breast cancer makes people uncomfortable. Many of my long-time friends seemed to vanish when they learned about my diagnosis. Some people just don’t understand what it means to live with breast cancer, and that can scare them away. For the longest time, I didn’t know where to turn for support, but I knew I needed to talk to someone who could understand what I was going through.

“I’ve learned that support can come to you when you least expect it. Sometimes just the way someone looks at me — a nod, a knowing glance — has been the catalyst for remarkable conversations that have given me the strength to continue my journey. I think I’ve also become a stronger woman. In fact, each time someone shows concern or support for me, it makes me want to do more to be that voice of breast cancer support to other women who are going through what I’m going through.”
